Neurodiversity in Books!
April is a meaningful time to reflect on the neurodiversity that shapes our community. At First Teacher, we’ve loved exploring books that offer a window into the many ways our peers think, feel, and experience the world.
Here are two books we’ve read that celebrates neurodiversity in our Goodnight Book Club!
Too Much! An Overwhelming Day is a book by Jolene Gutierrez sharing that even the things that we love and enjoy can become too much for individuals with sensory processing disorders. Gutierrez uses this easy to read book to convey an awareness of understanding cues, and following the direction of our children or friends when they demonstrate that they need a pause to reset.
My Brain is a Race Car by Nell Harris creatively depicts how minds that have ADHD process thoughts and ideas, or pick up information along their journey. Harris makes the comparison of brains to cars in a way that is easy to understand and connect to. The pictures in this book creatively demonstrate the plethora of thoughts in the brain like a race car.
