Parents are always looking for no-cost and stress-free activities to do with our children. Does such a thing actually exist in the city of Boston? Believe it or not, YES something like that does exist - and it’s an excellent opportunity in so many ways. On Saturday, September 17th, First Teacher held its 3rd annual Fall Fun Fair at the St. Patrick’s Church in Roxbury, MA. As I walked around, I noticed so many great things happening.
I observed and felt:
A stress-free environment.
Parents and children engaging in activities such as jump-roping, tossing a balloon in the air, an obstacle course, and touching live sea animals for the first time.
Joy in the air.
Parents/Caregivers playing with children other than their own.
Many fathers (some grandfathers) playing with their children. (Without moms present!)
Child-led learning and fun.
A sense of community being built and strengthened.
A mom present without her own children!
Parents connecting with one another through authentic conversation.
An interactive community hang-out.
A fun fair is exactly what it sounds like: a large open space where parents/caregivers can bring their child/children to have fun at no-cost; and if your child wants to stay in one place the whole time, that’s OK! Just as long as they are having fun and the fun is stress-free for the parent/caregiver. While families have a good time, they also walk away with much more than that. They leave fun fairs with a sense of connection and community. There is no pressure to be a perfect parent. Every parent is there for the same reasons: stress-free, agenda-free, no-cost activities that keep our children engaged. All you have to do is follow your child’s lead, connect with other parents and enjoy the time together with other community members.
When my family left the fun fair, my 5-year-old said “Mom, that was really fun!” And I have to admit he was right, because being at the fun fair was probably equally as fun for me, as it was for him.
If you missed our Fall Fun Fair, don’t fret. We have three fun fairs per year. Thank you to St.Patrick's church in Roxbury for their generosity; they have allowed us to use their facilities to host at least one of our fun fairs each year. Our upcoming Winteractive Fun Fair will be held there in February 2017.
